Course Description

Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) is an 8-week evidence-based program, specifically designed for individuals with elevated blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., stress, poor diet, smoking, high salt intake, poor medication adherence, etc.).
Adapted from the gold-standard, 8-week MBSR program, MB-BP includes training in mindfulness meditation, mindful movements, education about hypertension and heart health as well as personalized support for reducing cardiovascular risk factors.
Designed by an expert in cardiovascular health and a mindfulness researcher at Brown University (Prof. Eric Loucks, PhD), the MB-BP program has been clinically tested and shown to reduce systolic blood pressure in individuals with uncontrolled hypertension, along with improving diet, sedentary behavior, mindfulness and self-awareness. The course consists of eight weekly sessions that are 2.5 hours along with an orientation at the start of the program and an all-day extended-practice session typically held on a weekend around week 5 or 6 of the course.

Learning Outcomes
  • Learn and develop evidence-based mindfulness meditation skills and practices, such as the body scan, focused attention, walking meditation, mindful eating and mindful movements
  • Understand the risk factors of high blood pressure (stress, diet, physical activity) as well as its effects on health and mortality
  • Explore cravings and their management, and learn how behaviors like overeating, inactivity, alcohol consumption and medication adherence can lead to high blood pressure
  • Enhance awareness of thoughts, emotions and physical sensations surrounding your relationship to hypertension risk factors
  • Adopt processes for self-care

Health Disclaimer:
MB-BP is not designed to replace the clinical expertise provided by a healthcare professional, such as a cardiologist or primary health care provider, but rather is best delivered under the consultation and partnership with your physician. While clinical trials have shown evidence that MB-BP may reduce blood pressure, individual results are not guaranteed. Please consult with a healthcare professional to see if this program may be right for you

Testimonials

“This program has been transformative for me. I’ve learned more than I ever imagined. The exercises that improve mindfulness skills and the data collection and monitoring activities during the sessions helped me to understand the linkages between the mindfulness practices and how they affect my body and mind.” - Joe.Wong, MB-BP Graduate

“Since the mindfulness course, people close to me notice that I recover from stressful situations much faster. I’ve had doctor appointments where my blood pressure was much lower and very close to my target, which hadn’t happened since my hypertension diagnosis many years ago.” - Liz McKenna, MB-BP Graduate “I found this class life changing. The 2.5 hours flew by. Sessions were very well organized. I loved being in this very diverse group which was really supportive of each other and we bonded as a group. Very quickly. I have slowed down and have become more relaxed and it has improved all of my relationships.” - Anonymous, MB-BP Graduate.
